Despite all the progress made, the Truth is Alex 4-8 weeks from finding permanent housing. This is why we are raising the fundraiser to $13,000. Alex needs funds for:

Housing: currently costing $900 a week
Food: $150 a week
Transport and miscellaneous: $100 a week

As of now Alex has enough to cover herself until September 7th. We want to make sure she never has to choose between doing something she doesn't feel comfortable with for funds, or end up homeless.

Alex needs emergency donations right now to stay housed.

We are raising $10000(fundraiser increased due to Alex being in the cheapest hotel possible way longer than expected) to keep Alex from becoming homeless while she finishes apartment applications, signs a lease, and moves into accessible housing with her caretaker.

Alex is a 24-year-old non-ambulatory disabled trans woman with cerebral palsy. She uses a wheelchair. She cannot survive on the street. This is not a normal housing crisis.

If Alex ends up on the street, she will die.

Since April 1st, Alex has been living in an Extended Stay America after hospital-covered housing ended. The hotel has been brutally expensive, and the money that kept her safe this long is almost gone. Each night there buys her one more day indoors, but it is draining the last of what she has before she can get into an apartment.

Without help right now, Alex may be forced into homelessness or into a state-run medical shelter that cannot handle her disability, medical needs, safety needs, or caregiving needs. As a non-ambulatory wheelchair user with cerebral palsy, she cannot be left outside. She cannot sleep on the street. She cannot just “make it work.”

Alex is close to stable housing. The paperwork problems that were blocking her from getting an apartment have finally been fixed. She and her caretaker have spent weeks gathering documents, dealing with applications, and trying to secure a lease. What she needs now is enough money to stay alive and housed through this last stretch.

Donations will help pay for the extended stay hotel, food, transportation, application fees, move-in costs, and basic needs while Alex works to get into permanent accessible housing.

Alex fled Florida in 2024 after being trapped between an abusive family situation and a nursing home where her HRT was stolen and her safety was threatened by violent transphobia and homophobia.

She came to the DC area looking for safety, medical stability, and a chance to live somewhere she would not be abused for being disabled and trans. Since then, she has fought hard to rebuild her life. After nearly a year in the hospital while officials searched for a nursing home or assisted living placement, she went through PT/OT and reached the point where she can now be alone for limited periods of time with the right support.

But the systems that were supposed to protect her kept failing her.

While in assisted living, Alex was placed with residents three to four times her age, many with dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other serious cognitive conditions. She was repeatedly traumatized by residents yelling at her, coming into her room, and making her feel physically unsafe. One resident repeatedly spied on her while she was using the bathroom and showering. Instead of protecting Alex, management covered up abuse, mistreatment, and staff failures, then tried to evict her. That eviction attempt was only stopped because of public pressure and help from multiple government agencies.

Now Alex is out of that facility, but she is not safe yet.

She is living day to day in an expensive extended stay hotel while trying to get into permanent housing. Her money is almost gone. In roughly three weeks, without donations, she will lose the only roof currently keeping her alive.
