On September 3, 1915, John “Memphis Slim” Chatman was born.

From Memphis to Chicago to Paris and stages around the world, Memphis Slim helped carry the sound of our city far beyond its boarders. His music became a significant part of the story of American blues.

Today, 1130 College Street, the site of his home, bears his name and Memphis Slim Collaboratory is helping write the next chapter.

Memphis Slim House, as it is affectionally known, is a community-rooted music and cultural space in Soulsville where Memphis artists can rehearse, create, collaborate, learn and grow.

Our work is built on a simple belief:

Memphis should not only celebrate the legends we produced yesterday. We must invest in the artists creating here today.
