Our comrades in Kenya have sent us the below information about efforts by the Social Justice Centers to address the recent flooding. They request urgent solidarity and support!

Mathare, one of Nairobi's largest informal settlements, is home to hundreds of thousands of working-class Kenyans — and it floods because the state has abandoned it. In 2024, blocked drainage systems, crumbling sewer infrastructure, and uncollected plastic waste turned heavy rains into a catastrophe. Homes were destroyed, families were displaced, and more than 70 people were killed.

Now it's happening again. Kenya's weather department is warning of heavy rains in the coming days — and just last week, flooding killed more than 27 people. Without immediate action, another disaster is inevitable.

What we're doing: We, the Domestic Workers and Waste Workers Cooperative, are mobilizing now — clearing drainage systems, removing plastic waste, and installing plastic booms and essential equipment to keep waterways open and protect our community. This is worker-led infrastructure, built from below because the state will not provide it.

What families need right now: Many families have already lost their homes and everything they own. They urgently need beds, mattresses, food, and basic supplies to survive and begin recovering. Your contribution goes directly to relief and to the equipment our cooperative needs to prevent further destruction.

Why we organize: The masses cannot wait for distant institutions to respond. Across Kenya, ordinary people have always stepped forward to build solutions when systems fail them. By building revolutionary structures that protect, feed, and support our neighbors, we strengthen the collective power of working people and demonstrate that communities can organize to meet their own needs. This is not charity — it is solidarity, dignity, and a direct contribution to the class struggle. When workers organize to save their own communities, they build the foundation for a world that no longer needs saving.
