Land Security for Keep Growing Detroit

After years of discussion, the owner of the land adjacent to the KGD Farm has generously offered to sell it to us. Owning this land will not only enable us to increase production, but it will also provide ample space for significant infrastructure projects that will benefit gardeners and farmers across the city. These projects include expanding transplant production to meet the needs of a growing Garden Resource Program and constructing a new washing and packing facility for Detroit-based growers eager to access the new market opportunities in the district.

Importantly, the farm expansion will also help us ensure that food and farming remain at the heart of Detroit's Historic Eastern Market.

Residents at transplant distribution

The KGD Farm

The KGD Farm is at the heart of all KGD does to help cultivate a food sovereign Detroit. Each year, more than 2,500 Detroit-based gardens in KGD’s Garden Resource Program receive hundreds of thousands of vegetable and herb transplants, along with 7,000 Motown Music seed garlic heads, all grown on the farm. We also grow 10,000 native plants that provide critical habitat for pollinators and birds, and nearly 10,000 pounds of produce for KGD programs, donation partners, and community markets.

In addition to being a productive growing space, the KGD Farm is also a gathering space and hub for Detroit’s urban agriculture community. It welcomes thousands of visitors for plant and produce drop-offs and pick-ups, hands-on workshops, farm tours, community dinners, and volunteer opportunities for those interested in Detroit's local food system.
