Pink Anchor Project provides emergency financial stability to single mothers facing breast cancer so they can focus on healing and caring for their children.

In 2021, I heard the words no one ever expects to hear: “You have breast cancer.”

At the time, I didn’t know exactly what that diagnosis would mean for my life, however I quickly realized that I was being called to do something meaningful in the breast cancer space.

Then in 2024, I felt a lump and the cancer was back.

This time the road was longer and harder — chemotherapy, surgeries, radiation, and a year of Herceptin for HER2+ breast cancer. As a single mom and the sole financial provider for my household, I was suddenly navigating treatment schedules, side effects, and recovery while still trying to keep life stable for my son.

Thankfully, I have a self-employed career that allowed some flexibility. Even with that flexibility, cancer drained my savings.

I remember the moment clearly.

I withdrew the last $2,000 from my savings account to pay my mortgage and prayed that God would provide, because I was completely tapped out.

That moment changed something in me.

During breast cancer treatment, the medical system does an incredible job of helping patients fight the disease. But what many people don’t see is the financial pressure happening quietly at home — especially for single mothers.

When you are the sole financial provider, treatment becomes more than a health crisis.

Doctor’s appointments can reach double digits in a single week. Side effects make it difficult to work. While insurance often covers major medical costs, families still face copays, deductibles, medications, and the everyday costs of keeping a household running.

Mortgage. Utilities. Groceries. Childcare.

For a single mother, those responsibilities don’t pause just because she’s in treatment.

Looking back, $3,000 of support would have been instrumental for us. It would have covered our mortgage, utilities, and groceries. More importantly, it would have allowed my brain and nervous system to relax just enough to breathe — and to be more present with my son.

My son is 11 now, and he has been watching his mom go through cancer since he was six years old.

At the end of the day, he doesn’t ask for much.

He just wants me to play with him and make his dinner.

That’s when the vision for Pink Anchor Project became clear.

Pink Anchor Project exists to help hold single mothers in place while they are navigating what is likely one of the hardest seasons of their lives.

While this vision began with my personal experience, bringing Pink Anchor Project to life has been a collective effort. I am deeply honored to walk alongside a board of directors made up of strong breast cancer survivors, women who each carry their own story and share a deep commitment to making sure families receive the support they need during treatment.

Together, we are building something many of us wish had existed when we needed it.

Through partnerships with cancer center social workers, community organizations like the Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor, and other community partners, Pink Anchor Project will identify single mothers undergoing breast cancer treatment or within 12 months of completing treatment who need financial support.

Our goal is simple but powerful:

Emergency assistance to help stabilize a single mother and her children during treatment, up to $3000.

Our launch goal is to raise $15,000, which will allow us to support at least five single mothers and their families.

Our broader goal for 2026 is to raise $40,000, helping at least ten families stay financially stable during treatment.

When a mother is fighting cancer, the last thing she should have to worry about is whether she can keep the lights on or food on the table.

Together, we can be the anchor that holds these families steady.
