Story

The mission of Kinship Senior Center (Kinship) is to provide seniors in New Orleans a safe place to thrive by staying active, learning new skills and forging meaningful social connections along the way. We remain dedicated to upholding our Four Pillars of Engagement: Enrichment, Education, Expertise & Exploration.

Older adults, especially those with disabilities, chronic conditions, lower incomes, or other vulnerabilities, need access to resources and fellowship to maintain or improve their quality of life and longevity. Seniors face the challenges of increased dependence on others, gaps in their established social networks, and decreasing mobility and strength. In addition, older adults experience a devaluation by society as they age or become frailer. These changes in the central activities of daily life can cause behavioral and physical health issues and lead to costly preventable institutionalization or even premature death.

By providing critical transportation service, volunteer opportunities, therapeutic arts, contemplative activities, and daily exercise, the programming at Kinship addresses and helps to solve these problems for our seniors. Participants can receive case management services, daily transportation, hot lunches, and benefit overall from weekly health and wellness classes.

The benefits of becoming a member at Kinship are myriad and really have the power to change the lives of seniors. Improved balance, reduced risk of falls, improved mood and endorphins, being supported in facing new challenges, saving money, securing grocery needs, strength building for joints and muscles, increased cognitive skills, learning new skills and technologies, meeting new people, standing up as community leaders, using the skills they already have, being in community with their peers - these are just a few of the many benefits of participating in Kinship's programs!
