I’ve proudly served on the READ Lakeland Board for more than five years—three years as Secretary, one year as Vice President, and now as President.
My grandparents immigrated to Syracuse, NY, from Ukraine, and English was actually their third language. I saw firsthand what it was like to navigate a new country, learn a new language, provide for your family, and simply manage the challenges of everyday life. My grandfather struggled with literacy himself, so READ Lakeland’s mission is deeply personal to me.
By providing adults in our community with the literacy, language, and educational tools they need, we’re giving people the opportunity to thrive, succeed, and build better lives for themselves and their families. That’s why the work READ Lakeland does means so much to me.
With nearly 24% of adults in Polk County struggling with low literacy, there is still so much work to be done. Every dollar we raise helps us reach more adults, provide more resources, and continue changing lives right here in our own community.
And one of the best parts? READ Lakeland’s programs are completely FREE to our students—we NEVER charge them a dime! FUNdraisers like Kiss the Pig help make it all possible!
