Saturday, February 15th (10 AM - 1 PM), join the California Field School and East Bay Yesterday for a journey through Oakland's history of radical organizing and resistance.

Starting at Peralta Hacienda Historic Park, we'll trace the lineage of community support and mutual aid from Fruitvale to Lake Merritt and learn about the changemakers who shaped Oakland's vibrant history.

Don't have a bike? No problem! Bikes and helmets will be provided for those who need them.

Suggested donation is $50, but a donation of any size is welcome. Become a monthly sustainer for an invite to the ride and lots more fabulous perks.

STORY

We are living in a time of instability and climate chaos, a time when the inherent inequality built into American systems is being seen more clearly by more people than ever before, and a time that is ripe for learning how to rely on ourselves and each other for what we need to survive AND what we need to thrive.

At the California Field School, we’re dedicated to building skills of self-reliance in young people. From learning how to survive in a post-fossil fuel economy by riding bicycles as transportation to learning how to build a home wherever you are by practicing camping, outdoor cooking, and foraging, we are helping young people step into their power.

We also know that we can’t thrive without strong relationships held by resilient communities. We build skills of negotiation, trust, communication, and ability to repair as we travel together and test ourselves against the limits of what we believe we can achieve.

Now, we invite you to support the vital skills-building trips by joining our Sustainers Wheel, a community of CFS supporters dedicated to providing on-going support for our work.

IMPACT

This year, the California Field School has made a tangible difference in the lives of young people and our broader community through meaningful partnerships and transformative experiences. We collaborated with:

Life Academy to empower students with practical skills and confidence to explore their surroundings by bike, connecting them to the vibrant ecosystems and resources in their neighborhoods.
Waterside Workshops, fostering hands-on learning opportunities in sustainable practices and community building while biking along the coast.
Peralta Hacienda, creating experiences that merge local history and outdoor education, helping participants understand the rich cultural and ecological heritage of the East Bay.
Common Roots (PODER/Bicis del Pueblo and Chinese Progressive Association, SF), combining cycling with advocacy, introducing students to the power of bikes as tools for social and environmental justice.
Justice Outside’s Outdoor Educators Institute, equipping the next generation of leaders with outdoor education expertise, emphasizing equity and inclusion in nature-based learning.
Oakland International High School, where we provided new immigrant youth with opportunities to build confidence, foster friendships, and navigate the Bay Area and California's coast using bikes as a means of transportation and empowerment.

Through these partnerships, we helped participants gain essential life skills, connect with their communities, and explore the Bay Area in ways that encourage resilience, curiosity, and environmental stewardship. Each ride strengthens our commitment to creating equitable access to outdoor experiences - pedal by pedal.
