Every September we hang a holiday on the word labor. We take the day off. We rest. Community cats never get to rest.

Because right now, somewhere in California, a cat is in labor. Not in a clinic. Not on a soft towel with someone telling her she's a good girl. In a parking lot. Behind an apartment building. In a backyard three blocks from you. She is giving birth exposed: to predators, to heat, to whatever finds her first. It is happening everywhere, in every city and every neighborhood in this state.

Sometimes it goes fine. Often it doesn't. Labor that stalls and cannot finish. Pyometra. Mastitis. A mother so malnourished her body has nothing left to give the litter it is already making. Outside, those are not complications. They are endings.

Here is the hard truth: all of it is preventable. It is arithmetic. At Los Angeles city shelters, cat and kitten euthanasia is up 43% in the first half of this year compared to last. Adoptions are down. Spay and neuter costs are up, right alongside rent, groceries, and everything else. So the one surgery that would have prevented generations of suffering gets pushed to next month. And next month. And then there are six more cats.

We cannot fix all of it. But we can fix this. One cat. One surgery. No more labor.
