Rooted in our city’s rich history, our attorneys protect the right of San Francisco’s seniors and adults with disabilities to be housed, healthy, financially stable, and safe.

For 46 years, Legal Assistance to the Elderly (LAE) has been San Francisco’s first, and often last, line of defense for seniors and adults with disabilities facing eviction, abuse, or loss of income and health benefits. Founded in 1979 by volunteer attorneys determined to make justice accessible, LAE remains the city’s only legal services organization focused exclusively on this vulnerable population. Our seasoned litigators and advocates are known for being legally brave: taking tough cases to trial, crafting novel arguments, and fighting until clients are safe.

In 2024 alone, we delivered free legal help to 1,900+ people, with 87¢ of every donated dollar going directly to programs as our budget grew to $5.38M. What sets us apart is our holistic, wrap-around model-housing, benefits, consumer, and elder-abuse attorneys working side-by-side with social service referrals ensuring lasting stability, security, and dignity.
