Our guests this week are, the CEO of the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, David, and the ED of the Gender Health Center, Dr. Malakai.

Malakai Coté, Ph.D. (he/they/fam) is a licensed psychologist and executive director with a profound commitment to holistic healing and dismantling health inequities. Currently, fam serves as the Executive Director of the Gender Health Center in Sacramento, CA, where their leadership is pivotal in enhancing healthcare access and healing opportunities for Queer, Transgender, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (QTBIPOC).

Additionally, Dr. Coté operates an independent practice in the Greater Sacramento area and provides clinical training and supervision at the Kindred Collective for Healing and Liberatory Traditions based in Santa Barbara, CA. They are also a founding member and past Vice President of the Greater Sacramento Association of Black Psychologists (GSABPsi).
Dr. Coté’s approach to care is deeply rooted in African-centered and liberation psychologies. He is dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of Queer, Same-Gender Loving, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color across the lifespan. His expertise spans culturally specific and SGL/LGBTQ+ liberatory mental health services, clinical supervision, program development, and professional development workshops.

Born on lands stewarded by the Kickapoo and Kaw/Kansa peoples, Dr. Coté is a proud
descendant of the Mende peoples of present-day Sierra Leone and their ancestors survived enslavement. They celebrate their identity under the LGBTQ+ umbrella and cherish their roles as a spouse, guide parent, and family member. He is also an active member of Beta Gamma Chi Fraternity, Incorporated.

David Heitstuman is CEO of the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, where he leads efforts to create a region where all LGBTQ+ people thrive through health and wellness services, housing, advocacy, and community programs. Since becoming involved with the Center in 2011, David has championed the development of affirming youth and mental health services, advanced inclusive public policies, and secured resources to strengthen community resilience. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to equity, justice, and the power of community building.

Before joining the Center, David served as chief consultant to California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and worked for four prior Speakers, providing more than a decade of legislative and political expertise. His experience also spans national campaigns, where he directed operations and advance for high-profile candidates and causes.

David’s leadership has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Stonewall Freedom from Fear Award, Sacramento Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 and inaugural Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Award, Sacramento Magazine’s “Most Powerful 300,” and the Rainbow Chamber of Commerce Community Leader of the Year Award.

He holds a master’s degree in public policy & administration from CSU Sacramento, is a graduate of Stanford’s LGBTQ+ Executive Leadership Program, and is well known for his event production prowess, international travel, and strong community ties.
