Founded in 2010 as the “Lawfare Blog” and started as a side project between founding editors—Benjamin Wittes, Jack Goldsmith, and Robert Chesney to explore an evolving and complex national security apparatus and the law surrounding it—Lawfare has matured from its humble origin to become a highly respected multimedia publication and research organization. In 2014, the Lawfare Institute became an independent, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Lawfare’s team hails from various and complementary backgrounds including private legal practice, academia journalism, intelligence, law enforcement, constitutional law, international law, technology & cybersecurity, research, and others.

We've grown and changed a lot especially as the 21st century national security environment has shifted. And we want to celebrate everything that Lawfare was, is, and will be, with you, our dedicated readers, listeners, and contributors.
