Blackstone Elementary School, one of the largest elementary school in the City of Boston, is a diverse and dynamic public school in the heart of Boston’s South End. The student body is made up of nearly 650 children, living in nearly every neighborhood in Boston, speaking at least 8 languages, and representing many different beautiful cultural backgrounds. A high percentage of our students experience hardships outside of school such as housing instability, food insecurity, language barriers, or limited access to support services. Blackstone Elementary’s core mission is a commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion while addressing the needs and special requirements of students throughout the City of Boston.

Friends of Blackstone School (FoBS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 45-5548029), believes in the transformative power of strong schools to foster vibrant communities. To accomplish this, it is paramount that our neighborhood school be supported by the surrounding community. FoBS was founded to provide this opportunity and, since 2012, has worked closely with the Blackstone School administrators and teachers to identify and fulfill specific needs. Our close collaboration with the school ensures that the funds we raise are used where and when it is most needed.

Areas we support include:

Equitable Literacy: Providing vital training for teachers and essential resources to enhance literacy programs, empowering students at all levels.
Educational Excursions: Offering enriching field trips to destinations such as apple orchards, the New England Aquarium, and LEGOLAND, including accessible transportation for students with disabilities.
School Culture and Belonging: Promoting inclusivity with culturally relevant artwork, welcoming signs, student work displays, and sponsoring community-building events like STEAM Night, Multicultural Night, and Wellness Night.
