Help Make Therapy Services Accessible to Those in Need

The Fountain Fund was founded by Shara McGlothan, a Marriage and Family Therapist who saw firsthand the painful gap between people needing therapy and people being able to afford it.

Every day, individuals are in need of support while navigating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, addiction, and relationship challenges. Too often, the cost of therapy becomes the barrier standing in the way of healing.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness each year. Yet for many, accessing quality mental healthcare feels impossible.

Some individuals are uninsured or underinsured and must pay entirely out of pocket for mental health services. Others have insurance but are met with high deductibles, session limits, restricted provider options, privacy concerns, or long waitlists. Many therapists want to help but are often forced to choose between reducing their fee to support the need and sustaining their own practice.

Mental healthcare should not be a privilege but a necessity. Those struggling with their mental health are at greater risks being unemployed, uneducated, incarcerated, hospitalized, or premature death.

That is why The Fountain Fund exists.

The Fountain Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to increase access to mental healthcare across the Kansas City metropolitan area by helping cover the cost of therapy services for individuals in need.

Through our funding model, clients can access therapy services for free or at a significantly reduced cost without placing the financial burden solely on providers to continually reduce their rates beyond what is sustainable. This helps maintain retention within the mental health field to insure everyone maintains access to care.

Just like a fountain is connected to a source that allows it to continuously pour out, we believe communities can become that source of healing for one another. When we come together, we create access.

How it works.

Application cycles will open throughout the year for individuals seeking financial support for therapy services. Once approved, clients can choose a provider from our approved provider network. The Fountain Fund pays providers directly, allowing both clients and therapists to maintain autonomy, dignity, and choice throughout the healing process.

This creates a true win-win. Clients receive the care they deserve, providers are supported fairly, and our community becomes stronger.
