MEET REUBEN PALI

Reuben Pali is a Lahaina grown founder of Maui Music Mission, a non-profit music school based in Lahaina town. Unfortunately, the school faced a setback when it succumbed to fire on August 8, 2023. Yet, amidst the ashes, Reuben's passion for music education has only intensified.

Reuben has been playing music as part of his Hawaiian culture since he was old enough to hold an ukulele. In his family, every single member could join in ‘kanikapila’, playing music together. Ukuleles were in the hands of keiki and teens everywhere, strumming as they would walk along the road or relax on the beach. But it’s much harder for kids to get their fill of music today, and Reuben was heartbroken to find out that the elementary schools don’t teach music classes at all.

Determined to bridge this gap, Reuben showed up at the park next to the elementary school, and right away there were 2..5..12...30..75 keiki playing ukulele , turning Reuben's dream into reality. Fuelled by community sponsors, Reuben's After School Music Club has empowered over 700 keiki. His students learn about music in culture, play multiple instruments such as piano, drums, violin, and guitar. They also learn to sing and perform on stage!

Reuben's commitment doesn't stop there. With an eye on displaced Maui families, he extends his mission with outreach programs and envisions a new studio facility in Wailuku. Calling upon parents, educators, policymakers, and fellow music enthusiasts, Reuben advocates for investing in music education. He believes it's a collective responsibility to nurture the dreams of our keiki and strengthen our communities, for a fulfilled dream is a tree of life!
