The Historic Cabarrus Association is leading a landmark preservation project to restore and reconstruct the Meadow View School, a powerful symbol of perseverance, education, and equality in Cabarrus County, North Carolina.

Originally built around 1890, Meadow View is believed to be the last surviving deconstructed African American "colored school" from the Jim Crow era in the county. For decades, this humble one-room schoolhouse served generations of Black children—providing opportunity and knowledge during a time of segregation. Featuring tall windows and hand-crafted details, it reflects the spirit of self-reliance that defined Black education long before the Rosenwald school movement began.

After integration, the school closed and merged with Shankletown School, and was then relocated by a local family. Its story includes beloved principal Mrs. Lucille Bost (Wyke)—a lifelong educator whose students still call Cabarrus County home today.

Now, thanks to a partnership between Historic Cabarrus Association, Niblock Homes, and the City of Concord, the Meadow View School is being preserved and reconstructed near the historic Phifer Family Cemetery—site of the famed Red Hill Tavern, which once hosted George Washington during his Southern Tour in 1791.

Once complete, Meadow View will serve as a living educational site. In this place, students, historians, and visitors can reflect on the county's African American heritage and the lasting pursuit of knowledge against adversity.
