Meadowbridge Community Market is a free store located in the Northside neighborhood of Richmond, VA that aims to address the food desert there and provide essentials such as groceries, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, masks, and more. We prioritize people’s agency in choosing what supplies they need, at no cost to them, no questions asked.

We partner with local businesses, farms, and organizations to offset waste and build community. It is our hope that the free store will be a place for neighbors to connect and strengthen mutual aid networks throughout the city as well. All donations go towards stocking our shelves and keeping the lights on! Our goal is to reach $10,000 in monthly donations to cover all base expenses of the free store.

Meadowbridge Community Market is a program of Mutual Aid Distribution Richmond (MAD RVA) or Richmond Mutual Aid, a volunteer-run collective that works to create a support system in response to COVID-19 and the devastating effects it has had. Throughout 2020 and 2021 our supply drive distributed groceries and other household necessities to 100 families per week on average. We have also redistributed over $250,000 to folks in need through our mini-grants program. Mutual aid is a political act of resistance as we strive to create a culture of care through solidarity, not charity. We know that community is all we have!

Help us buy the free store! The Meadowbridge Community Market building was purchased by a community member and leased to MAD RVA in 2022. The current lease runs through June 2027, and MAD RVA is hoping to raise funds to purchase the building. Our fundraising goal is $90,000, which will cover the down payment and closing costs for the sale of the building. Owning the building will secure the future of the free store and ensure that we are able to continue and grow our efforts, and we need your help with fundraising and getting the word out!
