WHAT?

Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota is relocating our primary Rapid City kitchen, responsible for 1,000+ meals daily, to Minneluzahan Senior Center.

We thank the Pennington County Housing and Redevelopment Commission for decades of support and for allowing us to utilize the River Ridge kitchen to make millions of meals possible for our community. We carry our memories and resilience forward as we embrace a new space, ready to face the challenges ahead.

WHERE?

Since 1977, The M.E.A.L.S. Program has operated out of the kitchen at River Ridge (330 Philadelphia St, Rapid City), a Pennington County Housing and Redevelopment (PCHRC) addition, built for the program to serve building residents and seniors living in the surrounding area.

The new location, just 500ft down the road at the Minneluzahan Senior Center (315 N 4th St, Rapid City), is a familiar space for Meals on Wheels, as it has functioned for decades as a senior meal site and community hub.

This relocation means adapting to a smaller kitchen space, but through renovations required for functionality and code-compliance, it is anticipated there will be no impact to the program's service capacity or meal output.

WHY?

The ongoing reductions to Federal and State funds have impacted communities nationwide, and Pennington County is no exception. In the fall of 2025, Meals on Wheels received a notice to vacate the River Ridge kitchen from PCHRC while they restructure their property and housing needs for this difficult landscape.

Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota is proud of the decades of service made possible through the River Ridge Kitchen and is very grateful for the ongoing partnership with Pennington County and the City of Rapid City to serve our older neighbors and surrounding communities.

WHEN?

The renovations at Minneluzahan Senior Center are well underway, with remodeling efforts having begun in February of 2026, with a completion anticipated before May 1st, 2026. The only interruption to services is expected to take place April 23rd-25th while major kitchen appliances are being moved and serviced. Preparation for this period has been well planned, and additional meals will be provided to all affected seniors.

BUDGET

With the benefits of a larger community space comes the costs of renovation and upkeep. This project has an initial budget of $200,000 as repairs for code-compliance require new plumbing, electrical, sewage, and outdoor storage structures in and around the existing kitchen space. Also included in these project costs are the additional fridge and freezer spaces needed for the kitchen to continue to produce upwards of 5,000 meals every week.

The reduced square footage and additional costs have required creative and cost-effective solutions to maintain the existing kitchen layout, while making the necessary building modifications for code compliance, saving the financial burden of bringing the entire facility up to code if a wall or doorway were to be added or removed.

Without disrupting the existing layout, we have implemented modular storage and prep spaces, including a large outdoor walk-in freezer, capable of storing 3-5 days' worth of food, accessible via existing sidewalks and doorways. Although not ideal for commercial use, extensive efforts have been made to maintain as much existing infrastructure as possible, including cabinetry, countertops, flooring, sinks, and appliances.

Once established, the Program must adapt to new costs such as rent and utilities, previously provided through the partnership with River Ridge. The rent for the Minneluzahan kitchen space is set at $3,000 a month, with an additional $3,000 going to utilities and upkeep, an additional $72,000 added to the already limited annual budget.

Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota is actively seeking sponsorship opportunities and has brought in $30,000 in fundraising efforts towards the $200,000 initial renovation.
