Meals in Motion: Move the Kitchen, Fuel the Mission

Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota received a notice to vacate our primary kitchen responsible for 1,000+ meals daily and time is of the essence.

By June 11th, Meals on Wheels must have a fully functional kitchen or seniors will go unserved. To quickly and cost effectively navigate this change, we are relocating the primary Meals on Wheels Rapid City Kitchen to a familiar space, Minneluzahan Senior Center. Renovations are underway and once complete, this new kitchen space will function as a super-hub for nutrition and connection for Rapid City seniors and beyond for decades to come.

A kitchen is a lifeline.

The Rapid City Meals on Wheels Kitchen currently provides over 1,000 local seniors from Rapid City, Hot Springs, Hermosa, Summerset, Hisega, Box Elder, New Underwood, Buffalo Gap, Black Hawk, and beyond with nutritious meals, social visits, and safety checks.

This project will provide a community kitchen space in Minneluzahan that prepares, serves, hosts, and delivers meals to homebound seniors with more opportunities and efficiency than ever before.

With seniors' wellbeing at the forefront, updating the kitchen at The Minneluzahan Senior Center will continue services in the most familiar, timely, and cost effective manner possible.

Merging resources and multiplying impact.

This project showcases mutual benefit and community collaboration. Relocating Meals on Wheels to the Minneluzahan Senior Center will create an accessible, low-cost super-hub for senior resources, leveraging the center’s ample space, amenities, and long history of support to expand opportunities for participants, visitors, staff, volunteers, and supporters.

Our presence will strengthen Minneluzahan as a central resource for senior well-being, drawing new visitors and supporters, diversifying opportunities, and demonstrating the affordability and impact of collaboration. In the evenings and on weekends, the upgraded commercial-grade kitchen will open to neighbors of all ages, generating revenue while providing a safe, functional community space.

Growing need, limited resources, and local solutions.

Since 1982, Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota (formerly the Senior MEALS Program) has operated from the River Ridge kitchen, built to serve residents and nearby seniors. From those beginnings, we’ve grown from serving a few dozen in Rapid City to delivering daily to thousands across 39+ West River communities.

South Dakota’s senior population is growing rapidly with residents over the age of 65 years projected to surpass 20% of the state’s population by 2030. Dozens of South Dakota’s assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and retirement communities have shuttered in the past five years and we must adapt to more seniors aging in their homes with fewer means.

Meals on Wheels Western SD continues to be the only daily home delivery program serving multiple West River communities, meaning thousands of seniors turn to Meals on Wheels for help aging independently with dignity in their homes.

Through decades of growing and adapting, Meals on Wheels Western SD’s mission and dedication to our senior neighbors stands stronger than ever. This project and partnership with Minneluzahan is essential to ensuring every senior neighbor in need can receive nutritious meals and connection they depend on.

Time is of the essence.

The keys to River Ridge are passed over June 1st and the kitchen at Minneluzahan must be ready to prepare, serve, and deliver upwards of 5,000 meals a week by June 11th.

Construction and renovation is nearly complete but additional funds are needed to finish the project.

The budget and the shortfall.

To transform Minneluzahan’s existing kitchen to meet the needs of our large and growing senior population, renovations are a must. The final estimated cost for this project is $250,000 and we are facing a $80,000 shortfall.

The reduced square footage and short timeline have required creative and cost-effective solutions to maintain the existing kitchen layout, only prioritizing the necessary building modifications for code compliance and functional necessities.

Of the total $250,000 budget, $98,000 pays for new plumbing, electrical, grease trap, and sewage lines, all required for code-compliance.

$106,000 pays for outdoor commercial walk-in fridges and freezers to store the four plus tons of food that pass through the kitchen each week.

The final $46,000 covers remaining miscellaneous costs including equipment repair, moving crews, site decommissioning, storage, and administrative overhead.

Nearly all cabinetry, countertops, flooring, sinks, and appliances remain original, maintaining a familiar charm while optimizing functionality and safety for all who use it.

Despite the ongoing construction, the Rapid City kitchen has continued to serve all seniors without lapse, and with your help, the kitchen will continue to serve for decades to come.

A kitchen is a lifeline, and moving the Meals on Wheels Rapid City kitchen to a familiar, central space keeps that lifeline strong. This project reduces costs and confusion, uses what the community already has, and protects what matters most: daily nutrition, a quick check at the door, and the comfort of being known.

The plan is complete and the path is clear. Partners are aligned, renovations are nearing finish, and code, safety, storage, and workflow are set for dependable, daily service. Everything is ready to go. What remains is the final community investment that brings this kitchen fully to life.
