The Data Behind Our Work

Did you know that in 2022 15.08% of youth (age 12-17) report suffering from at least one major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year? Even more alarming, almost 1/4 of high schoolers report having seriousy considered attempting suicide in the past year (2022).

According to Lee et al. in a 2021 study reviewing fans within a particular music fandom, fans perceive emotional connection through artists’ messaging in their lyrics, and in the knowledge that other fans are listening to the same music. [Fans] also connect with the artists through shared mental health experiences and challenges that [band] members discuss in interviews and media other than music. Some [even] take an active participatory role in interpreting and creating content and engaging with the artists and others.

About the Campaign
SUPERBANDS was founded in 2016 by Jessica Sikora, who looked back on the impact that music had during her own teenage years and wanted to build the community of hope she once longed for. Struggling with depression and self-harm as a result of bullying, she relied on the songs from her favorite artists and bands to get her out of bed every morning, and it was through counting down until their next album release or next concert that kept Jessica alive. In 2021, the organization began granting wishes in the hopes of empowering teens nationwide through feeling connected to their favorite musicians.

On a big mission to grant 500 wishes in 2024 support the Unleash Your Inner Hero Campaign and help us make wishes come true through music. We give more than just packages, we give hope.
