In late August, Milwaukee was devastated by historic flooding — with over a foot of rain falling in less than 24 hours, leaving neighborhoods under 2 feet of water and homes filled with mud, mold, and loss. Families across the city have seen their basements, keepsakes, and daily essentials destroyed.

At Vans4VetsUSA, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our mission is to act as a vessel of hope for military veterans and their families when disaster strikes. Over the past few weeks, members from our team have been on the ground in Milwaukee helping alongside Samaritans Purse, an organization focused on the general population of residents affected by natural disasters, and in that have met veterans whose lives have been upended — helping move water-damaged belongings out of homes, listening to their stories, and standing with them as they begin the long process of recovery.

One of those veterans is Robert, a U.S. Army veteran who served our country for 20 years, delivered mail for decades, and now serves his community as a pastor. He and his wife are proud grandparents of 16. Their basement is full of items that need to be disposed of, and while our team has been able to help carry everything out, the city has ended free trash pickups and now charges per trailer load.

👉 Our immediate need is to cover Robert’s disposal costs, but our broader goal is to raise $5,000 so we can continue helping additional veterans we meet each day across Milwaukee who are facing the same struggle.

But this need goes far beyond one family. Each day we are meeting more veterans in Milwaukee facing the same struggle — homes overwhelmed by flooding, belongings destroyed, and unexpected disposal costs standing in the way of recovery.
