We are so blessed to love and be loved by Dorothy Witherspoon. As her 100th birthday approaches, we wanted to find a special way to celebrate her life of service. So, we determined that a children's picture book would be the perfect legacy-building tribute!

ABOUT DOROTHY WITHERSPOON & THE PROJECT

Dorothy Mae Morris Witherspoon is the wife of the late Rev. Carl Witherspoon. They had three children: Gloria Jean, Carl Edward, and Ronald Earl.

Miss Dorothy’s Garden: 9 BEE Attitudes to Grow By is an illustrated tribute to her century of service and a celebration of her 100th birthday on October 7, 2024. For over eighty years, she has been rooted in the soil of the City of San Francisco as a resident of the historic Bayview Hunters Point community. Her influence spreads throughout the State of California and our nation in the children, adults, and leaders of her family of faith.

Dorothy Witherspoon’s long and fruitful life as a psychiatric nurse, Sunday School teacher, Christian leader, and volunteer with the Red Cross, Community Police, and Food Bank is an example for us all. She has helped us deal with the trauma of loss, anxiety, and instability for decades. Like a faithful gardener, Dorothy Witherspoon has added the nutrients and care needed to make San Francisco’s diverse neighborhoods bloom with love, innovation, and resilience.

Her life’s work planting kindness has blossomed into the wisdom of Miss Dorothy’s Garden: 9 BEE Attitudes to Grow By. It is just in time as our children face an unprecedented mental health crisis. An attitude can be likened to the soil in a garden. We can all use these principles to pull up the weeds and break up the rocky, dry soil of our hearts.

Miss Dorothy’s Garden: 9 BEE Attitudes to Grow By will be treasured by our children, youth, and the young at heart. It reminds us that when we sow seeds of care for ourselves and one another, the fog will lift, the sun will come out, and we will shape the landscape of tomorrow.
