When Mogwai arrived at Familiar Hearts in August, she weighed just 2.78 pounds.

Not 2.78 pounds as a tiny kitten.

2.78 pounds as a nearly grown cat.

Found alone in Germantown, she was desperately weak, severely dehydrated, and struggling simply to stay alive. We don't know how she ended up in such heartbreaking condition, only that by the time she reached medical care, her body was running out of reserves.

During her hospitalization, Mogwai's temperature dropped to a dangerously low 94.7 degrees, leaving her hypothermic and in critical condition. Veterinary staff placed her in a warming incubator and slowly administered warmed fluids while treating the dehydration and severe constipation that had left her body overwhelmed.

For four days, Mogwai fought.

And little by little, she began to win.

Today, several weeks later, she's almost unrecognizable.

The fragile cat who could barely hold on has now more than doubled her weight. Instead of quietly conserving energy, she's busy exploring, playing, and making it nearly impossible for her foster to take a still photograph.

There is a tiny white spot on one side of her nose and an expression that some people jokingly describe as grumpy. But what we see is something entirely different.

We see a cat who looks surprised to be here.

Surprised to be warm.

Surprised to be safe.

Surprised that after everything her body endured, she has another chance.

Mogwai still has some healing ahead of her. Before she can be adopted, she will need to continue gaining strength, receive her vaccinations, and undergo spay surgery when her body is ready.

What she doesn't know is that her rescue has already come at a cost of $1,201.60 in lifesaving veterinary care, with additional medical expenses still to come. We're hoping to fully cover those expenses while preparing for her upcoming spay surgery + wellness care.

When Familiar Hearts said yes to Mogwai, we didn't know what the outcome would be.
