Objective:
The "Move to Aid" initiative is a community-driven event led by UC Riverside's Dance Graduate Student Association (Dance GSA), designed to provide a space for movement, professional development, and creative practice. In alignment with the Dance GSA’s mission to expand community engagement and support, the initiative aims to raise resources and awareness for relief efforts through donation-based workshops, with 100% of proceeds or collected items being donated to organizations supporting those affected by recent crises, including Friends In Deed.

Event Overview:
We propose to host a one event on Saturday, May 31st from 5-8pm featuring five (5) donation-based workshops, each led by graduate students from the Dance Department. These workshops will focus on various forms of movement, dance, and professional development. Participants will be encouraged to donate either monetary contributions or essential items (new and unworn clothing, non-perishable food items, hygiene products, school supplies, etc.).

Friends In Deed is an interfaith nonprofit organization serving greater Pasadena area communities since 1894, dedicated to providing compassionate, dignified support to individuals experiencing homelessness and vulnerability.

Their comprehensive programs include:

The Food Pantry provides food assistance to over 600 low-income and no-income families weekly
The Women’s Room is a daytime refuge for women experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness
The Bad Weather Shelter provides nighttime refuge to individuals experiencing homelessness during the cold, winter months
The Street Outreach and Housing program builds trusting relationships with individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness, connecting them to vital services and guiding them on a path toward permanent, supportive housing.
Eviction Prevention and Rental Assistance provides short-term rental support to individuals and families at risk of becoming homeless.

In response to the devastating Eaton Fire in January 2025, Friends In Deed mobilized swiftly to support affected residents by distributing essential supplies, collaborating with local partners to address immediate and long-term recovery needs, and shifting program services to meet people where they are, offering hope and tangible assistance during times of crisis and beyond.
