The Challenge & Urgent Need

To continue delivering critical community programming, expanding fresh food access, and supporting local initiatives, we must overcome a immediate financial hurdle.

Due to administrative fees and an unexpected accounting oversight, an outstanding operational debt was incurred with the State of Alabama Department of Revenue. We are addressing this situation directly and taking the necessary structural steps to ensure long-term administrative compliance and governance. To resolve this burden and safeguard our ongoing work, we are turning to our community for support.

There are new updates to the previous article about the effort to open Blue Seas 2 Restaurant here in Tuskegee! As indicated, the group behind the effort, We Tuskegee Ubuntu Cooperative, continues to be in conversation with the proprietors of the restaurant. At a recent in-person meeting, we were apprised that through a recent series of family events, Brother Craig and Sister Janet have been able to acquire a bank loan to pay off the debt owed to the Alabama Department of Revenue. A family property was used as collateral. This is good news!

Along with the grace brought by this good news, come a different set of decisions and opportunities. Among them the fact that there is a bank loan that needs to be paid off, there is the inventory that needs to be replaced, there are the upgrades that need to be made (if Blue Seas is to remain in the current location, yet another decision), etc.

So, the campaign remains ongoing, the goal remains the same, the mutual aid request remains the same. As we continue to explore options, we want to express immense gratitude for the outpouring of community support thus far! Secondly, we vow to keep the community informed in the spirit of complete transparency.

Our Fundraising Goals (still going)

Soft Goal ($85,000): Directly satisfies the debt obligations, allowing the organization to operate on clear financial footing.

Hard Goal ($100,000): Fully resolves the debt while allocating $15,000 toward internal financial oversight, professional accounting services, and administrative infrastructure to prevent future oversights.
