The Mystic Roots Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit, is dedicated to empowering Black communities through the recovery and stewardship of ancestral lands. We promote Black agrarianism, advance holistic health, and restore the legacy of land ownership. Our mission is to cultivate sustainable agricultural practices and foster well-being through integrated approaches to health and wellness.

We are located on beautiful Sapelo Island, GA in the Historic Hogg Hummock Community which is one of the last intact coastal Gullah Geechee communities in North America. It is also under the direct threat of gentrification which has the potential to displace the indigenous population, dilute our cultural identity, and erode the social fabric and heritage of this historic community. Our foundation is dedicated to the restoration and recovery of Ancestral lands as well as the development of said lands with agriculture as a catalyst for change and economic development.

Heritage Garden Restoration Initiative
Acquiring more land to expand our growing operation of heritage crops and medicinal herbs
Daily administrative duties
Farm infrastructure needs such as irrigation systems, greenhouses, fencing, and equipment
Securing housing for farm staff
Acquiring fruit trees, herbs, and vegetable starts for our food forest farm project
Construction cost for our 1,400 sq ft cottage and retreat center
Renovation of a 100 year old store into an herbal apothecary and community artisan market
Stipends for additional farm support

Seven Sisters District Development Project

Nestled in the middle of Hogg Hummock will be the Seven Sisters District, named in honor of the seven daughters of Bilali and Phoebe Mohammed, the Patriarch and Matriarch of the descendants of Sapelo Island. From their seven daughters spawned the original 33 families.

The Seven Sisters District will consist of:

Cultural Excursion Lodge (Dining Hall, Business Center, Commercial Kitchen)
Arts and Crafts Learning Center & Gift Shop (Basket Weaving, Quilts, Art, Storytelling, Cast Nets)
Health and Wellness Center (Herbal Medicine, Botanical Garden)
S.A.L.T. Civil Rights Center For Justice
Groundskeeper Lodge
3 STR (Short Term Rental) Cottages

Our vision is to cultivate a thriving ecosystem of Black Agrarianism and economic development, through small business incubation, that nurtures sustainable agriculture, fosters financial independence, and promotes holistic well-being. We envision a healing sanctuary retreat center that honors and promotes the agrarian roots of our Ancestors, while also providing a space to reconnect to our Mother Earth.
