The Jailhouse Lawyer Initiative (JLI) envisions a world where the U.S. criminal legal system is abolished through legal empowerment, breaking the cycle of incarceration and building pathways to true freedom, peace and justice. Legal empowerment democratizes the law, enabling individuals to understand, use, shape and transform legal systems to meet their needs and advocate for change. At JLI, we focus on supporting and empowering incarcerated human rights defenders—jailhouse lawyers—who are often the only source of legal aid and advocacy for incarcerated communities.

JLI’s innovative approach turns the post-conviction phase into a powerful opportunity for community legal empowerment, equipping jailhouse lawyers to educate and support their peers while fostering a justice system grounded in equity and human dignity.

Our 4 Main Goals:

We connect incarcerated and formerly incarcerated jailhouse lawyers to foster a supportive community dedicated to justice and legal transformation. JLI has a membership of over 1000 incarcerated members across every state in the US.https://jailhouselawyers.org

2️⃣ Provide Legal Education and Empowerment
We ensure incarcerated legal workers have the resources, education, and relationships needed to address their own justice needs and those of their peers.

3️⃣ Raise Visibility
We spotlight jailhouse lawyers as indispensable members of the American legal ecosystem, advocating for their recognition and support.

4️⃣ Create Pathways for Legal Knowledge Sharing
We develop pathways for jailhouse lawyers to return their legal expertise to their communities both during and after incarceration.
