A few years ago, my life changed forever.

My wife was diagnosed with ALS, a progressive and devastating disease that slowly took away her ability to walk, speak, eat, and eventually move independently. Overnight, our lives became a maze of medical appointments, equipment needs, home modifications, caregiving responsibilities, and impossible decisions.

While the healthcare system provided appointments and reminders, it didn’t provide a roadmap for what was coming next.

No one explained how quickly we would need a wheelchair. No one helped us anticipate the changes required to make our home safe. We scrambled to coordinate home health care, secure specialized equipment, and learn how to care for someone with increasingly complex needs. We often felt alone, overwhelmed, and unsure where to turn.

One moment stays with me to this day. During one of the most vulnerable times in our lives, a nurse suggested that my wife's ALS was somehow a punishment for our lesbian relationship. Instead of compassion, we encountered judgment.

What we desperately needed was someone knowledgeable, organized, and compassionate—someone who could guide us through the system, advocate for us, and connect us with respectful, culturally competent care.

We needed a navigator.
