Kait Sakey's Story

I first met Nourish's founder, Sarah, when she received Isenberg School of Management's Leaders of Impact Award. Inspired by her talk, I asked how I could help. A few years later, I now sit on the U.S. Board of Directors for Nourish Eco Village.

I just returned from visiting Nourish South Africa, and what struck me was how big the organization was compared to what I had pictured. It wasn't until I was there that I learned that we had 45 employees! And, the organization was running like a well-oiled machine as evidenced by my experience with the wonderful tourism team. I had a *lightbulb* moment when I realized that my best way to help Sarah was to help fundraise (something I've never done before). Although I studied Operations Management, I learned closley that Sarah & her team are gurus and truly didn't need advise or guidance as much as we just needed to ensure their funding continue.

During my visit, I met with microloan recipients growing their businesses, had a really special time hanging out with the preschoolers in the crèche, met with teenage girls learning financial literacy skills, and saw firsthand how community-led programs are changing lives. I also enjoyed a boat tour with the hippos and an opportunity to spend a full day in safari-mode at Kruger National park.

Everytime I've written donation check, I've wondered where the money goes and if I truly feel comfortable with the donation. In this case, especially from being on the ground, I can honestly say I am completely sure any donation will be used well on initiatives  helping the children, the animals or our planet. I have almost doubled my monthly donation due to this confidence.

I met entrepreneurs who had received microloans of approximately $150 USD—funding that with the currency exchanged truly helped them purchase pest control for their farms, buy inventory in bulk, and strengthen the businesses that support their families and the community.

I did not understand until being on-site how far the US dollar goes. But now, I'll never forget that $150 can fund a lifechanging business loan.

If you're looking for an organization that combines compassion with strategy and focuses on long-term impact, I hope you'll consider both visiting and supporting Nourish. Being involved with Nourish really helps me connect to a greater purpose.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Nourish's mission or will choose to today. ❤️
