Considerations for Driving Readiness was presented by Occupational Therapist, Cyndee Crompton, MS, OTR/L, SCDCM, SCLV, CDRS, who specializes in driver rehabilitation services. Attendees will learn about the professional assessments and interventions that can discern an individual’s ability to drive. Whether assessing a child or adult, road safety is of paramount importance. Planning ahead to enhance a young person's skill set to aid with eventual driving. Gaining insight in specialized driver training services and how to advocate for those services. Knowing what accommodations could help in driving independence. Understanding the value that driving brings in a person seeing themselves as "normal" versus the medicalization of them. Questions and answers at the end of the live recorded event.

What You Will Learn:

This presentation will discuss the value of driving for an individual with Turner Syndrome. This will include:
Building Driver Readiness Skills at an early age (navigation, visual/spatial, decision making, visual scanning, motor skills and reaction time, etc.)
Giving a girl a chance at Driving

How to discuss with regular driver's education department, the need for services from a
Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist

What is a driver evaluation
What happens in driver training
Accommodations for short stature
How to address visual spatial concerns behind the wheel
Navigation: Difficulty finding routes, following directions, and using maps
Attention: Difficulty focusing on important information, such as road signs and traffic
Spatial awareness: Poor spatial awareness can make it difficult to change gears or assess
distance between cars

Who Should Attend:
Parents and adult women with Turner syndrome, allied health professionals, educators, administrators, and policymakers are encouraged to attend. Many individuals are challenged by deficits that may be common for someone with Turner Syndrome. Concerns such as vehicle accommodations, dealing with navigation challenges, attention deficits, visual perceptual processing or anxiety affect many people as it relates to driver comfort and safety.

About the Presenter:

Cyndee Crompton, MS, OTR/L, SCDCM, SCLV, CDRS, who specializes in driver rehabilitation services. As an occupational therapist I have had extensive interactions with individuals with challenges, and have worked with them to address, overcome, compensate, or remediate for those challenges. My career focus has been on aiding individuals with challenges to drive independently.
