Oasis Legal Services increases access to culturally responsive legal representation and wraparound services for LGBTQ+ immigrants who have experienced violence and persecution in their home countries. Since Oasis’s inception in 2017, we have served over 2,800 LGBTQ+ clients from 68 different countries on their journey to permanent safety in the United States.

About the event:

We’re excited to bring back Puzzle Palooza, a fast-paced, community-centered fundraiser that powers critical services for queer and trans asylum seekers. Groups of three (3) race against the clock, and each other(!), to finish a never-before-seen jigsaw puzzle.

Lightning League vs. Steady Hands League

We are introducing two puzzling leagues to create an even playing field amongst different skill tiers. Oasis will provide a custom puzzle (available as 500-pieces or 300-pieces). Experienced competitors may consider the "Lightning League" to collectively work on a 500-piece puzzle. More novice players are encouraged to join the "Steady Hands League" to complete a 300-piece puzzle. Both leagues will compete at the same time, with a total allotted 60 minutes.

In the lead-up to game day, teams will fundraise to support our work. At a time when LGBTQ+ immigrants continue to face escalating threats, this event is a chance to take action and build community while having fun. Whether you are a puzzle pro or puzzle-curious, we’d love to have you join us.

How It Works:

The registration fee for a team of three (3) is $45.
Teams receive a limited edition puzzle.
Each team will have a suggested fundraising goal of $500.
Teams that meet designated fundraising benchmarks will earn prizes

This event is family-friendly and free for spectators! We'll have:

FAQ’s:

1. Can kids participate?

Yes! Puzzle Palooza is family-friendly and open to all ages. We recommend ages 10+ for competitive teams, but younger supporters are welcome to attend.

2. Can my team bring any puzzling tools to the competition?

No. We will provide each team with the same number of trays to help sort the puzzle pieces. Outside tools will not be permitted.

3. How long is the event?

Teams are given one hour to complete their puzzle, but expect the entire event to last about 3 hours.

4. Do we need to fundraise to participate in a team?

Fundraising is optional but highly encouraged! Teams that fundraise help us support more LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and offset the cost of the event.

5. What if I can’t stay the whole time?

You’re welcome to attend even if you can’t stay for the entire competition, though fundraising and raffle prizes are awarded at the end of the event.

6. Are walk-ins allowed?

Only if space allows, we strongly encourage pre-registration as competition tables and puzzles are limited. We will try our best to accommodate walk-ins.

7. Will food or drinks be available?

We will have light snacks, beverages, and alcoholic beverages for our 21+ guests.

8. Is the venue handicap accessible?

Yes. The venue is on the first floor with elevator access from the parking lot. Competition tables can be tight, so please reach out if our team can help accommodate additional space if needed.

9. Is parking available?

1951 Coffee Company is a short walk from the Downtown Berkeley BART Station and has a paid underground parking lot at the venue (purchase a parking ticket at the kiosk and place it on your dashboard). If you enter through the parking lot, take the elevator up to Level 1 and turn left. There is also metered street parking. If you enter through the cafe, you can walk through the backdoor and head left.

10. Can I get a refund if I can’t make it?

Team registration fees are non-refundable, but you may transfer your spot to another participant.

11. Will there be prizes?

Yes! Prizes are awarded for the fastest team, most funds raised, with chances to win raffle prizes from local businesses.
