Acclaimed duo and festival friends pianist Donna Lee and clarinetist Dan Gilbert will share a special program.

About the artists

Steinway artist Donna Lee made her solo pianist debut in 1990 with the National Symphony Orchestra. She has since appeared as a soloist and collaborative artist at Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall and Terrace Theater, Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, and throughout the US, in Shenyang, China, Brno, Czech Republic. As a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed at the Ameri-China Festival in China, Gotland Chamber Music Festival in Sweden, Brevard Music Center in North Carolina, Interlochen Arts Center in Michigan, Kent Blossom Music Festival in Ohio, Maui Classical Music in Hawaii, and Classical Tahoe in Nevada. As a duo, Donna and her husband clarinetist Daniel Gilbert have performed throughout the United States, as well as in Chengdu, China.

A highly respected pedagogue, Donna Lee has received accolades for her teaching. In 2021, she was inducted into the Steinway & Sons Teacher Hall of Fame and received a Distinguished Teaching Award from Kent State University, the institution’s highest teaching honor, where she serves on the faculty as Professor and Coordinator of Piano. During the summers, Donna is artist-faculty and Coordinator of Piano at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina.

A native of Maryland, Donna Lee earned her doctorate from Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University, Masters of Music from The Juilliard School, and Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Maryland. donnaleepiano.com.

Clarinetist Daniel Gilbert is Professor of Clarinet at University of Michigan. Previously, he held the position of Second Clarinet in the Cleveland Orchestra from 1995 to 2007. In addition to his teaching position, Dan serves as Principal Clarinet of the chamber orchestra CityMusic Cleveland. In the summers, he serves as clarinet faculty at Brevard Music Festival, Principal Clarinet of Brevard Music Center Orchestra, and Principal Clarinet of Classical Tahoe Festival.

An avid chamber musician, Dan collaborates extensively with today’s leading musicians, most notably with his wife, pianist Donna Lee. A native of New York City, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale and both a Master of Music degree and Professional Studies Certificate from The Juilliard School. Prior to joining the Cleveland Orchestra, he was an active freelancer in New York City, appearing regularly with The Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theater, New Jersey Symphony, Solisti New York, Stamford Symphony, and New Haven Symphony, where he played principal clarinet from 1992 to 1995. With the Quintet of the Americas in 1994-1995, Dan toured the United States and was in residence at Northwestern University.

As an artist/clinician for the Buffet Group USA and the Vandoren Corporation, Dan has appeared as a recitalist and clinician throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia; his concerts and master classes have received critical acclaim. He plays exclusively on Buffet and Vandoren products.
