Every person's "homecoming" should feel special.

Because everyone deserves a seat at the table. Literally.

It's homecoming season, a time about coming together, coming home.

But for families facing housing instability, coming home often means an empty house.

No table to share a meal at. No bed to rest your head. No desk for a child to do homework on.

The warehouse is our home base, and that's where it all starts: client appointments, furniture storage, heat on in winter, A/C on in summer, lights on so volunteers can organize donations, open doors to take the next appointment from someone with nothing to sit on.

Without it, there's nowhere for a single piece of furniture to even exist, let alone reach a family.

And once a family is matched with furniture, it has to make the trip from the warehouse to their new home. A couch that can't get through the door will never finds its second home. It may have been saved from a landfill, but it won't fulfill our mission without reaching a home that needs it.

Take care of our home base, and you make sure every piece finds its way home.

We challenge 30 donors, new or old, to commit to $10-40 of recurring donations throughout the year.

Ideally, if we get 30 donors at $20/month, that equates to $7,200 for the year, which can provide sustainable revenue for us, allow us to plan for bills, and fund more regular client deliveries of furniture.

About Open Door Exchange

Open Door Exchange (ODE) is Long Island’s first and only public furniture bank, founded in 2015 with a mission to furnish homes, and futures, for neighbors in need. Based in Port Jefferson Station, ODE collects gently used furniture and redistributes it free of charge to individuals and families transitioning into stable housing. We serve veterans, single parents, survivors of domestic violence, children aging out of foster care, and others facing hardship, with the goal of turning empty apartments into welcoming, functional homes.

How We Began

The idea for ODE was born in the heart of the Setauket Presbyterian Church. In 2015, then-Pastor Kate Jones Calone led the church’s youth group on a service trip to A Wider Circle, a furniture bank in Maryland. Witnessing the direct impact of providing basic household furnishings to those in need, and the environmental benefit of keeping furniture out of landfills, Kate returned home with a vision. Upon researching, she discovered that Long Island lacked a furniture bank, despite high demand. ODE began humbly, collecting donations in a shipping container, gradually growing with the help of volunteers and community members into a fully operational warehouse facility.
