Sometimes a second chance comes when you least expect it.

Blair is an estimated 4–6-year-old Rottweiler who was brought to West Valley Animal Shelter after her owner was arrested. Blair had an owner. She had a home, and when she arrived at the shelter, it became clear just how much care this incredibly sweet girl, hadn't received in her life.

Blair came in at a staggering 143 pounds. Her weight is so significant that she will ultimately need to lose more than half of her current body weight to reach a healthier condition. Getting her there won’t happen overnight, and it isn’t as simple as putting her on a diet. Blair will need a carefully managed weight-loss regimen, appropriate nutrition, controlled portions, safe activity as her body allows, and continued monitoring as we slowly and safely help take the strain off her body.

But her weight is only part of what needs to be addressed.

Blair needs to be spayed and will need entropion surgery to correct a painful condition affecting her eyes. If you remember Salem, who was adopted from us some time ago, she had the same condition. Blair also has a mass on her side that needs to be biopsied and removed. She’ll need follow-up care and a comfortable place to recover while we begin the much longer process of getting her body healthy.

West Valley Animal Shelter is generously sponsoring Blair’s vaccines, and we will be taking responsibility for her spay and the remainder of her medical care, as well as the food, supplies, and comfort items she’ll need throughout her recovery and weight-loss journey.

Through all of this, Blair has been an absolute angel.

She’s sweet. She’s done well around other dogs. She trusts. She loves. And despite the condition she arrived in, she has given us every reason to believe there is an incredible dog underneath everything her body has been through.

Our veterinary clinic has given us a quote of approximately $1,200 TOTAL for Blair’s procedures, which is almost unheard of for the amount of veterinary care she needs. We’ve set Blair’s fundraising goal at $1,500 so we can cover those procedures while also helping provide the quality food, supplies, and comfort items she’ll need as she heals and begins the long journey toward a healthy weight.

That means 75 people giving $20 fully funds Blair’s goal. If 150 people give $10, she’s there. And $5 gets her closer, too.

This may not be how anyone expected Blair’s next chapter to begin. But sometimes life changes in an instant, and for Blair, that change may have opened the door to something she desperately needed:

A second chance.

We can’t change the care Blair received before she came to us. We can’t change what brought her to the shelter.

But we can decide what happens next.

We can get her eyes comfortable. We can remove and biopsy that mass. We can get her spayed. We can help those pounds come off safely. We can give her a soft place to land while her body heals.

And, eventually, we can find Blair the home where the rest of her story gets written.
