✨ About Omito

My name is Omito Abraham Owuor, age 34 — a trained permaculture teacher and the founder of K-5 Village Project, a registered Community-Based Organization (CBO) based in Kawiya Hills Village, Kochia, Homa Bay County, Kenya.

For ten years, I have worked to empower youth, support vulnerable families, and build community resilience through sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and practical vocational training.

K-5 Village focuses on:

Permaculture & regenerative farming
Syntropic agroforestry
Organic vegetable and fruit production
Youth & vocational skills for school dropouts
Support for disadvantaged and orphaned children
Environmental management & restoration

🌿 The K-5 Village Story

K-5 Village began in 2014, shortly after I finished high school. My father passed away in 2013 while I was completing my final exams, leaving my mother to support eight children on her own. With no funds to continue my education, I turned to farming and community service.

Using simple techniques and organic materials, I started a small vegetable garden. Local youth became interested and joined me. What began as a small plot soon evolved into K-5 Village, a community-led project promoting practical skills, food security, and sustainable livelihoods.

Today, K-5 Village produces:

Vegetables and fruit
Bananas
Pine trees
Chickens, sheep, and cows

These serve both as income sources and as hands-on learning environments for the community.

🤝 Project Growth Over the Years

Over the past several years, key investments have helped K-5 Village expand its impact:

✔️ Housing & Infrastructure

Construction of two community-supported houses
Installation of a 5,000L water tank
Installation of a 10,000L water tank
Fencing and boundary improvement using local materials
Roof-mounted solar panels for household energy
Purchase of a motorbike to support farming and transportation needs

✔️ Tree Planting & Environmental Work

Establishment of a healthy stand of white pine trees, first planted in 2018
These trees now provide construction poles, fencing material, and income from timber
Ongoing agroforestry work supporting soil health and long-term sustainability

✔️ Farming Expansion

Growth of vegetable production
Banana and fruit tree planting
Livestock management (cows, sheep, chickens)
Training youth in sustainable, low-cost agricultural methods

👩‍🌾 Women at the Heart of K-5

The success of K-5 Village is supported by the consistent work of women who help run family farms, care for children, and sustain day-to-day operations.

One example is Sharon Akoth, who contributes to farm care, household organization, and supporting children connected to the project. Her work reflects the essential role rural women play in community-based farming initiatives across Western Kenya.

🎨 Art, Children & Community Engagement

K-5 Village also encourages creativity as part of its youth-focused work. Children in the community participate in drawing and small art projects, especially when materials like colored pencils and paper are available.

These activities bring joy, support learning, and provide a healthy outlet for children growing up in challenging circumstances.

The project also cares for vulnerable children, including those whose parents are absent or unable to support them. This includes providing a safe home, basic needs, and a nurturing environment.
