Between 2023 and 2025, as part of our #LIMEPakistan (Leadership in Menstrual Education) program, SFY trained and equipped 1,000 women educators, across 46 schools in 6 different cities with menstrual healthcare trainings, educational resources, and Safepad sanitary pads. Now in 2026 Society for Youth is launching a new campaign to provide 1,000 girls with complete menstrual health security and education for an entire year. Every $15 dollars you contribute anchors one girl's future.

The Day Everything Changed: When Biology Becomes Scandal

Kainat was braiding her hair, her school uniform neatly pressed, when she felt the first unfamiliar cramp. By the time she reached her classroom, a dark stain had bloomed on her uniform. “My first thought was that I had got some kind of injury or illness,” she recalls. In that moment of confusion, a moment shared by millions of Pakistani girls, Kainat’s education, confidence, and safety hung in the balance.

What happened next wasn’t support. It wasn’t guidance. It was what teacher Samar Jafery describes with chilling clarity: “The girls were laughing at her... they followed her to the washroom, mocking her. They surrounded her as if a mob had been created. Everyone was saying she was pregnant and had taken medicine for an abortion.” The truth? Heavy periods. But in a country where 57.2% of girls receive zero information about menstruation before it begins, biology becomes rumor, a medical event becomes a moral scandal, and a classroom becomes a courtroom.

This is the hidden crisis playing out in Pakistan’s schools. It has measurable, devastating consequences:

33% of girls drop out permanently after their periods begin
50% miss 1-5 school days every month, falling irreparably behind
60% report their teachers never provided any menstrual health guidance

This isn’t just about pads. It’s about the silence, shame, and systemic failure that turns a natural process into an educational emergency. But after three years of groundbreaking work, we have not just identified the problem; we have proven the solution.

We Have Not Been Sitting Idle: Evidence from the Frontlines

For three years, Society for Youth has been conducting what amounts to a nationwide listening tour and intervention pilot. We didn’t wait for policy change; we went directly to the classrooms where the crisis was unfolding.

Our #40in4 Campaign reached 42 schools across 5 cities, delivering direct interventions to 2,672 students. The most shocking discovery? 100% of these schools had never hosted a formal menstrual health training session before we arrived. As our Board Member, Dr. Sundas, observed: “Students were facing misconceptions and stigma related to menstruation... worsened by period poverty and unprepared teachers.”

We then scaled our work with LIME Pakistan, moving from crisis response to systemic change:

Trained 1,000 teachers as menstrual care mentors and health advocates
Contributed 20 million PKR in household savings for families during Pakistan’s inflation crisis
Prevented 3 tons of menstrual waste through sustainable Safepad distribution

One local school principal captured our philosophy perfectly: “If one person is educated about periods... they can educate a class of 30-40.” We’ve seen this multiplier effect in action. Now, we’re ready to apply everything we’ve learned to create a true transformation.

Our Vision: From Trauma to Sanctuary

We are no longer just managing a crisis. We are building Trauma-Informed Educational Sanctuaries, schools reimagined as frontline protective centers where a girl’s dignity is guarded as fiercely as her education.

This represents a fundamental shift in three dimensions:

1. Healthy Leadership Over Labor
We’re moving beyond preparing girls for the workforce. Our goal is Academic Excellence, Emotional Resilience, and Civic Leadership. We want girls to lead community dialogues, not just attend them.

2. The Protection Factor
We’re redefining the school’s role. No medical event—especially heavy periods—should ever trigger a “mob scene” or expulsion demand. Schools should be the safest place to navigate adolescence.

3. Empowerment Over Empathy
We’re replacing “sharmindagi” (shame) with Scientific Confidence. We want girls to understand their bodies with the same clarity they understand mathematics or literature.
