In the years following emancipation, Ms. Carrie Steele Logan was building a life in Atlanta. An emancipated slave who worked as a maid at the Atlanta railroad, Carrie’s greatest legacy would not be defined by the work she did for a living. It would be defined by the children she chose to care for.

Before there was an official institution, Ms. Carrie Steele Logan was already providing care and shelter to children who had been abandoned and left without a safe place to call home. In 1888, she chartered the Carrie Steele-Pitts Orphan Home, transforming her compassion and commitment into a lasting place of care, community, and opportunity.

Carrie could not have known how far her vision would reach.

More than 137 years later, Carrie Steele-Pitts Home continues the work she began by supporting youth impacted by foster care and creating opportunities for young people to develop life skills, explore careers, build confidence, and prepare for independent futures.

Our Legacy. Their Future. is a celebration of Ms. Carrie Steele Logan and the Black community that helped carry her vision forward.

This Black Philanthropy Month, we are honoring where we came from while investing in where we are going: a future where every young person has the opportunity, support, and community they need to thrive.

Carrie Steele started with a simple belief: children deserve to be cared for.

Today, we carry that belief forward.
