Many of us have been taught to think about nutrition as simply what goes in the bowl. But nourishment is so much more than nutrients on a label. The food our dogs eat shapes not only their physical health, but their nervous systems, resilience, behaviour, emotional wellbeing, and overall experience of the world. Sometimes what looks like a “training issue” may actually be a body asking for support.

In this conversation, we’ll explore what species-appropriate nutrition really means, why it matters, and some of the clues trainers and behaviour professionals might notice when nutrition could be playing a role in a dog’s wellbeing or behaviour. We’ll touch on the gut-brain axis and the microbiome, while also moving beyond purely reductionist approaches to consider the wider ecology of nourishment - including stress, environment, regulation, relationship, and the energetic atmosphere our dogs live within.

At its heart, this conversation is an invitation to remember that nourishment is both science and soul. That caring for dogs is not just about managing symptoms or meeting physical needs, but about supporting the whole living being in front of us. Together, we’ll explore what becomes possible when we begin to nourish our dogs - and ourselves - with greater awareness, curiosity, and connection.

Dr Alexia Mellor is a holistic canine nutrition and wellbeing consultant and the voice behind the Mystic Dog Mama podcast. She supports a whole-dog approach to care - one that moves beyond symptom management and considers nutrition, physiology, environment, stress, and the human–dog relationship as interconnected influences on health.

With a PhD in researching complex systems, Alexia brings a big-picture lens to her work, helping people move beyond quick fixes to understand how everyday choices shape a dog’s overall wellbeing. Her approach is both biologically grounded and relational, recognising that nourishment extends beyond food to include the lived experience of the dog, and the connection they share with us.
