Dear readers,

The palabra newsroom is small but mighty.

We’re a combination of new and career-long reporters, expert fact-checkers, and seasoned editors – sometimes wearing all three hats – in order to produce impactful, high-quality journalism.

We’re all members of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), an educational and charitable association dedicated to advancing latino journalism for the last 40 years.

As a nonprofit newsroom, palabra is also participating in NewsMatch, the biggest fundraiser for nonprofit news across the country. All across the US, members of the Institute for Nonprofit News, like us, are asking their readers for support. Now through Dec. 31, NewsMatch will be matching all contributions dollar-for-dollar, up to $1,000 in an individual contribution.

Yep, that means $5 turns to $10.

$20 turns to $40.

$50 becomes $100!

This is a BIG opportunity for us. Funds raised during campaigns like this go directly to paying our writers, editors, and supporting professional development opportunities for up-and-coming journalists. Our goal is to raise $18,000 to directly support the dedicated freelancers who work tirelessly to amplify powerful voices that need to be heard.

We carefully select our projects to maximize local impact and foster the professional growth of our contributors. In just five years, palabra has published 220 articles and documentaries, uplifting the work of 200 reporters, photojournalists, and editors.
We pay fairly and we pay on time—that’s our motto.
We’ve shed light on groups promoting the false narrative of non-citizen voting, featured a team of Latina journalists connecting with Latino voters in Nevada and Arizona, and partnered with MindSite News to amplify the voices of immigrant communities in Chicago, united amid election-related anxieties.
We’ve also launched a two-year investigative project exposing the lasting impacts of the family separation policy, which has robbed a generation of immigrant children of educational opportunities.

Journalism should always hold those in power accountable. We’re staying close to the ground and doing a lot of listening, because the most impactful stories are local and are best told by community journalists.

These stories are crafted with care, passion, and a commitment to authentically reflecting the diverse Latino experience. Each one undergoes thorough fact-checking, and every Spanish-language story is treated as unique—not just a translation.

palabra, the last word before a new narrative, is a bilingual multimedia platform led by Latinos, producing stories for a Latino audience locally and nationwide. Founded in 2019, palabra was created by the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) to nurture, support, mentor and showcase the work and vision of independent journalists.

The platform provides freelance journalists with an opportunity to share local stories — often overlooked by larger news outlets — perspectives, and an authentic, honest portrayal of the Latino community.

Donor & Financial Transparency

We are committed to transparency in every aspect of funding palabra.

Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors or their products, services or opinions.

We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and foundations to help with our general operations, coverage of specific topics and special projects. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates as a public trust, we do not pay certain taxes. We may receive funds from standard government programs offered to nonprofits or similar businesses.

Our news judgments are made independently – not based on or influenced by donors or any revenue source. We do not give supporters the rights to assign, review or edit content.

We make public on our website all revenue sources and donors who give $5,000 or more per year. As a news nonprofit, we avoid accepting charitable donations from anonymous sources, government entities, political parties, elected officials or candidates seeking public office. We will not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.
