Bethany Just Became a High School Graduate

After hard work and determination, Bethany recently passed her final HiSET exam with support from her volunteer OC Literacy tutor.

As a parent of two young children and facing multiple obstacles, Bethany is officially a high school graduate! She is preparing for community college, and we are proud to continue supporting her next steps.

Bethany’s story is exactly why OC Literacy – Pathways to Learning exists.

We are a grassroots, volunteer-driven nonprofit providing free one-to-one tutoring for adults in Orange County, North Carolina. We help adults build skills in reading, writing, math, English language learning, and GED/HiSET preparation. We are inclusive and welcomes adult learners and volunteers of all backgrounds, cultures, faith traditions, identities, and life experiences.

When Orange Literacy closed, many learners were left without support. We stepped in so those learning journeys could continue.

Today, volunteer tutors meet with adult students in libraries, community spaces, and online. Instruction is individualized, respectful, and built around each learner’s personal goals.

Our learners come to us for many reasons:

To earn a high school equivalency diploma
To improve reading or math skills
To gain confidence using English
To qualify for better jobs or training
To build a stronger future for themselves and their families
