I'm raising money for PBI Guatemala because they protect human rights defenders day after day and hour after hour. PBI volunteers embody the root meaning of solidarity as a communion of interest and responsibility, and their dedication reminds me that words are never enough.
This fundraiser is timed to coincide with the publication of my poetry chapbook "Surrounding the Country a Chasm" (Slapering Hol Press). The ten poems in this collection issue from personal experiences in postwar Guatemala between 2000 and 2005. During those years, I volunteered for human rights organizations and traveled with my older brother who worked as a journalist in Guatemala City. I also began writing some of these poems with the hope that one day they might bear witness from that time to the present and honor those who continue to fight for peace and justice in the wake of genocide.
