Juan Francisco’s Story: A Journey of Survival, Faith, and Hope

Juan Francisco is the sixth of eight siblings. His life began under the shadow of unimaginable violence and loss—experiences that shaped him, even if he doesn't fully remember them. When Juan was only one year old, his grandfather was tortured and murdered in front of his entire family. Juan’s cries echoed in the night as he witnessed the horror. That same night, they fled.

They sought shelter under a tree, exposed to the elements. The wind blew, mosquitoes bit, and the fear of what might come next made it impossible to rest. Juan, just a baby, whimpered, but his father hushed him. Silence was their shield. The following day, they returned only to bury their grandfather and another elder who had been murdered. There was no coffin—just a hastily dug hole in the earth. So they fled again, taking only what they could carry.

Juan's father searched for safety. His mother kept them in an abandoned house while he searched for a new beginning. Eventually, they found refuge in Rio Blanco, in a community called La Sandino. That’s where they started over. The 1980s were marked by civil war in Nicaragua. Although Juan was too young to remember, the violence shaped his nervous and sensitive nature. They lived with the ever-present tension of conflict. Their parents worked tirelessly to protect the children, feed them, and raise them with dignity.

Their father became a local faith leader and Juan studied until sixth grade in a small community. Later, he joined the Capuchin Franciscans, where he earned his high school diploma. But tragedy was never far behind. Armed gangs—remnants of the war—murdered and beheaded Juan's uncle and brother-in-law. This heartbreaking loss forced his family to once again search for safety.

They dreamed of peace and a better future.

Juan left the Capuchins to help his father rebuild. Together, they started a new life on a small farm—a place of hope and healing. Juan pursued higher education and earned a Bachelor’s degree in English. He also reconnected with his faith community and met Nolhenny, his future wife, through the church youth group. Today, Juan and Nolhenny are raising three children. Two still live with them, while their eldest is now independent. Juan teaches at a school over an hour and a half from their home. Despite the distance and time constraints, he continues to serve his church and community.

Though he has little time to help on the farm, Juan contributes financially whenever he can. This farm represents more than a livelihood—it’s a sanctuary built from sorrow, faith, and resilience.

Finca El Carmen: Growing Healing and Hope

The farm, now named Finca El Carmen, has become an essential part of the community. It is more than just a piece of land; it is a regenerative farm rooted in principles of sustainability, nourishment, and healing. Finca El Carmen not only provides fresh produce to surrounding families, but it also serves as a place for education, spiritual renewal, and hands-on learning.

By practicing regenerative agriculture, the farm restores the health of the soil while feeding both body and soul. It stands as a living testimony to what is possible when hope is nurtured, and the land is treated with care. The community gathers here for fellowship, food distribution, and workshops that empower people to grow their own food and reconnect with the earth.

We are now raising funds to support Juan Francisco, Finca El Carmen, and families like his—who have overcome violence, displacement, and grief to rebuild their lives.

The farms resident family lives in a small wooden home on the farm—one of the original buildings from the early days. Over the years, the structure has endured decades of weather and wear. Today, it suffers from a severely damaged roof that leaks during the rainy season, putting their living conditions and belongings at constant risk. Replacing the roof is urgent! Along with the roof, much of the wood is deteriorated and needs to be replaced.—not just to improve safety and comfort for Juan’s family, but to preserve their only home and protect the heart of Finca El Carmen.
