What's Happening

A new wave of fossil-fuel and data-center development is coming to South Carolina. Dominion Energy & Santee Cooper have proposed a new, 2,200 megawatt methane gas plant in Canadys, SC. The plant would be built on the Edisto River, and would be supplied with a new pipeline cutting through the ACE Basin. If built, the proposed gas plant would be one of the largest in the country.

Why This Matters

It would be a environmental disaster. Mass burning methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, is going to accelerate the climate crisis and hurt our local climate action goals. Recent studies have shown that gas power is just as bad for the climate as coal.
It would make us sick. A 2025 Harvard Data Science Center study shows that, if this plant is built, 2 million+ people across South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida would be impacted by air pollution that can cause cancer, stroke, lung disease, pneumonia, and other long-term health risks.
It’s expensive. The plant’s projected cost currently stands at $5 billion. Who would foot that bill? Us, the ratepayers! Dominion would pay for this plant with a rate hike, putting the cost burden on their customers.
Population growth alone isn’t enough to justify a plant of this size. Instead, much of the power from this plant would go to data centers. The reality is that utilities see profit opportunities in new data center demands, like the one that private company Eagle Rock wants to build in SC, putting our land, water, and futures at risk for short-term financial gains.

What We're Doing

Charleston Climate Coalition is leading the Lowcountry’s grassroots push to stop this plant from being built. We are a part of a coalition of statewide and regional organizations working to stop this plant. Our on-the-ground, grassroots approach complements their legal strategies and grassroots organizing, ensuring that the community is aware of the proposed plant and its ramifications.

We get folks involved through creative storytelling and advocacy. Our unique mix of storytelling, art, and advocacy brings people together to build community and stand against projects like the proposed gas plant and pipeline.

Training and mobilizing volunteers to knock on doors across Colleton County near the location of the proposed plant
Securing regular press coverage about the proposed plant and why it will harm the community.
Songs to Save the Edisto Concert Series- A series of events gathering musicians, artists, community members and environmental activists coming together to raise awareness and build the movement.
Mobilizing permit fights- the gas plant requires a number of air and water permits. We are keeping people aware and mobilizing each step of the way as we did with the People's Hearing.
Hosting One Creek Trash Show- a three-day art show featuring work from 50+ SC-based artists who are using trash from the Noisette Creek and cleanup on Edisto Island, to create art that reimagines what we could build instead of the proposed gas plant and pipeline.
