It started with a cardboard box.

A mama cat and her babies were left outside Pet Angel while we were closed. We were worried when we found them—but then we realized they had escaped.

And we panicked.

Our one and only full-time employee, Abby, stopped what she was doing, went searching, and thankfully found them. One by one, she managed to get them all safely inside.

Rebel and her babies were safe.

But then came the question: “Now what?”

Pet Angel was already full. Our resources were already stretched thin. And suddenly, we had a mama cat and her babies who needed us.

Then a local news reporter reached out after seeing their story—and now we're asking everyone who comes across it to help us turn this unexpected situation into something positive.

Here's where your support can make a difference.

ABOUT PET ANGEL

Pet Angel Adoption & Rescue is a specialized, cat-only rescue focused on the cats who are often overlooked.

Our specialty is helping cats with extra needs find the right homes and giving them the time and care they need to thrive. That includes shy and fearful cats, elderly cats, cats with medical or behavioral needs, cats who prefer to be the only cat in the home, obese cats who need help getting healthier, and bonded pairs who need to find a home together.

A mama stray with a litter of kittens isn't necessarily our typical wheelhouse anymore.

But when Rebel and her babies were abandoned at our facility, we couldn't simply turn them away.

They needed help. So we helped.

THE STORY BEHIND THIS CAMPAIGN

Recently, Pet Angel became involved in the rescue of a mama cat named Rebel and her kittens after they were abandoned outside our closed rescue facility.

Rebel and her babies were left in a taped-up cardboard box while our building was closed. When they escaped from the box, they were found hiding around the property.

What followed became much bigger than simply getting a mama cat and her kittens to safety. It became an opportunity to talk about responsible pet ownership, animal abandonment, rescue capacity, and what our community can do differently when a cat or kitten needs help.

Want to see the EXACT moment Abby rescued Rebel, Jett, Breezy and Zippy?

Abby vlogged the whole thing as it happened—from realizing the kittens had escaped, to searching for them, to finally getting them safely inside.

Rebel and her kittens now have a safe place to grow, receive the veterinary care they need, and eventually find their forever homes. The fundraiser specifically created to fund their veterinary care has now been fully funded, and we are incredibly grateful.

Now, we want to use the attention surrounding their story to help address two other needs that came out of this situation.

STRENGTHENING PET ANGEL'S SECURITY

One of the lessons we've taken from this situation is the importance of continuing to protect our rescue, our property and the cats who call Pet Angel home.

As part of this effort, Pet Angel is investing in an upgraded security system to provide additional coverage and protection around our facility.

This is an investment in the future of Pet Angel—not only to help protect the animals currently in our care, but to help us continue providing a safe and secure environment for the cats who depend on us for years to come.

We won't be sharing specific details about our security setup publicly, but your support will help us make meaningful improvements to the protection of our rescue, effective immediately.

HELPING THE CATS STILL OUTSIDE

There are also two feral cats living outside the rescue, with the possibility of a third black, fluffy cat being part of the group as well.

Pet Angel is not a TNR organization, and we do not have the capacity to offer TNR services to the public.

This is a special circumstance involving cats already directly connected to our rescue and our property. Because of that, we are going back to our roots and stepping in to help these particular cats.

Our goal is to safely trap them, have them spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, and then place them in appropriate barn homes where their needs can continue to be met.

Any barn placement will have requirements in place to make sure these cats are provided with appropriate shelter, food, water, acclimation time and ongoing care.

The goal isn't simply to move them somewhere else. It is to give them a safe and appropriate life.

If we are able to locate and safely trap the third black, fluffy cat as well, we hope to include that cat in this effort too.

A LESSON WE HOPE THIS STORY CAN TEACH

We know that people don't always abandon animals because they don't care.

Sometimes people are overwhelmed. Sometimes they don't know what resources are available. Sometimes they genuinely believe that leaving an animal at a rescue, shelter, animal control or another location is the best way to get that animal help.

But we hope this story can teach an important lesson:

Please don't dump animals.

Leaving a cat or kitten somewhere without making arrangements does not actually solve the problem. It can put the animal in danger, and it also creates an emergency situation for someone else to handle.

In Rebel's case, her abandonment meant that I had to stop what I was doing to search for her and her kittens, secure them, and figure out how to care for them. And while I will always step up when an animal needs help, those emergencies come with a very real cost to a small rescue like ours.

Pet Angel is currently completely full. We have one full-time paid employee—me, Abby—and a team of incredible volunteers, and most of the cats already in our care have extra needs that require additional time, attention and veterinary care. Our resources are already stretched to care for the cats who are depending on us.

When an animal is unexpectedly abandoned at our facility, we don't suddenly gain additional time, money or people to handle that situation. We have to spread the resources we already have even thinner. It means stopping the work of caring for our current cats, handling adoptions, fundraising, running the day-to-day rescue, or whatever else needs to be done to respond to an emergency that could have been prevented simply by reaching out for help first.

But that doesn't mean I don't want to help.

Helping people find solutions for cats is one of the things I am most passionate about.

Even when Pet Angel cannot take a cat, I am happy to talk with people, provide resources, share information, help brainstorm solutions and offer whatever advice I can.

You don't have to know what to do before you call us.

Please don't box an animal up and leave it somewhere.

Call. Talk to someone. Ask for help.

Let's find an appropriate, humane solution that works for the animal and for the people involved.

That is how we actually create better outcomes.

SUPPORTING A SAFER FUTURE

The funds raised through this campaign will first go toward the two projects highlighted in this story:

• Strengthening and improving Pet Angel's security system
• Veterinary care for the outdoor feral cats, including trapping, spay/neuter, vaccinations and microchipping, with the goal of safely placing them in appropriate barn homes

If we are able to locate and safely trap the third black, fluffy cat as well, we hope to include that cat in this effort too, providing it full medical care and after fixing, either placing it in a barn home, if feral, or putting it up for adoption.

Any funds raised beyond the cost of these specific projects will go toward Pet Angel's general mission—keeping the lights on, keeping food in our cats' bowls, providing the additional veterinary care our cats with extra needs require, and making sure every cat in our care receives the love, environment and care they deserve.

This story started with a difficult situation.

Our hope is that we can turn it into something positive—a safer rescue, safer futures for the cats involved, and a community that knows there are better options than abandonment.

Thank you for helping us turn a difficult situation into a safer future.
