In India, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women. What is heartbreaking is that almost 100% of these deaths are preventable through vaccination, early screening, and aggressive treatment of early-stage cancer. WHO has set three strategic goals for 2030 based on research on what works to eliminate cervical cancer.

1. 90% of vaccination for adolescents.

2. 70% screening rates for women 30-65

3. 90% treatment of women for cancer diagnosis

We are at <2% for both vaccination and screening in India.

Two-thirds of these deaths are in young women in India, and they impact their children as well by leaving them motherless. Education and awareness around this, and women’s health in general, then opens up the discussion around the importance of women in their families' well-being, preventive healthcare, and empowerment of the marginalized. There is a palpable frameshift as these conversations take root in the eyes of women and their communities. Following evidence-based protocols that are of high quality also changes the narrative of acceptable standards of care from healthcare providers. This, in turn, creates a model feasibility, and for policy adaptation not only within our state of Karnataka but also in other parts of India and in area of the world where there is a struggle around health.

We are raising funds for

1. Creating education and awareness content in Kannada for the people we serve - for both vaccination and cancer screening. Cost ~ $10,000

2. Equipment for start-to-finish screening services in-house - This is an alternative to current solutions, which are either referrals to an overburdened government tertiary care center or possibly to providers who don’t follow recommended protocols and overtreat. This overtreatment leads to unnecessary hysterectomies and significant financial burdens for the women whose screening shows early precancer, which has simpler low-cost treatment alternatives. This, in turn, causes fear and leads to hesitancy to begining the screening process in the first place. Bringing in the entire cascade of care at PHRII prevents women from having to go through long wait times, unnecessary surgeries, and financial hardship. It will help us provide cost-effective, WHO-recommended care with respect and dignity. Cost ~ $125,000

3 Research protocols to document our findings and amplify them for policy change. Cost ~ $15,000.
