After we get to know our neighbors and grab some pie and coffee, Scottsdale City Councilman Barry Graham will let us know how we can ensure our voices are heard at Scottsdale City Council, Scottsdale Unified School District Board Member Carine Werner will provide an update about our schools, and Merissa Hamilton from EZAZ.org will teach us how we can make a difference and stop all the bad things from happening.

About Scottsdale City Councilman Barry Graham: Councilmember Graham began his first term on the Scottsdale City Council in January 2023. Councilmember Graham grew up in northern Scottsdale and was an all-state athlete at Chaparral High School. Today he lives in southern Scottsdale where he and his wife, Farrah, are raising their twin sons.

Barry is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for one of the most prestigious accounting firms in Arizona. He specializes in auditing the financial statements and analyzing the performance of private businesses, most of which are based in Arizona. In 2014, Barry graduated from the Scottsdale Fire Department’s inaugural Citizens’ Fire Academy. The following year he served as Chairman of ‘Yes to Bonds’ campaign in which voters passed two critical public safety measures that funded relocating a fire station to the McCormick Ranch area and a new fire station in northern Scottsdale. Barry, a graduate of Scottsdale Leadership’s Class 28, was a member of the city’s Planning Commission, and served as Chairman of both the Transportation Commission and Building Advisory Board of Appeals.

As a history enthusiast, Barry spent several years after high school in Massachusetts, earning undergraduate degrees from Boston University in Economics and International Relations. While working as an analyst in the Massachusetts State Legislature, Barry graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a Master of Science in Accounting where he delivered the commencement address.

Barry has served as a precinct committeeman since 2012 and was twice-elected treasurer of his political party’s local legislative district.

About Scottsdale Unified School District Board Member Carine Werner: Carine Werner is a mother, entrepreneur, business owner, and former finance professional. Highlights of her career include facilitating more than $100 million of commercial and residential loans, hiring, developing, and training more than 150 lenders, and creating the most six-figure income earners in her organization. Werner has been an active public-school mom for nearly a decade. She and her husband of nearly 30 years have three children, all graduates of Scottsdale Unified.

Werner brings to the Board a common-sense leadership style with an enduring passion for securing our children’s future, ensuring respect for parents and teachers, and building consensus without compromising values.

Werner immigrated to the United States as a child without any knowledge of English. Her personal experiences create a deep understanding of the English Language Development (ELD) community, and her professional and personal success are examples of all that can be achieved in America, regardless of one’s post-high school path.

Werner has stepped away from her family business to focus full-time on her role as an SUSD Board member. Werner’s goals include improving the quality of education offered to Scottsdale students and ensuring their safety on all SUSD campuses.

About Merissa Hamilton: Merissa Hamilton has worked with elected officials at all levels of government on essential reforms to stop bad government in its tracks, protecting individual liberty and personal responsibility. In 2020, she ran for Phoenix mayor, resulting in the highest number of votes for a non-incumbent in City history, stopping the defunding of the police, killing BLM plaza, and halting the vaccine mandates against City of Phoenix employees with the support of grassroots leaders from across the valley. Merissa previously served as the Chair of the Policing Sub-Committee on the Arizona Legislature’s Ad Committee on Criminal Justice and Director of Constituent Services for Councilman Sal DiCiccio at the City of Phoenix. She co-founded Strong Communities Action with an initiative called EZAZ.org, making civic action easy as pie so that citizens can effectively influence their government with just 15 minutes a week to save their state, mobilizing hundreds of volunteers and thousands of action alert responses by grassroots voters every month. She led the successful grassroots campaign to elect Warren Petersen as Senate President -- returning the Legislature to the people instead of special interests.
