All proceeds from the fundraiser support Gold Star Teen Adventures, providing life-changing outdoor adventure programs for teens who have lost a parent serving in the military, law enforcement, or our nation’s intelligence agencies. Funds raised help send Gold Star teens on transformative experiences like backpacking, scuba diving, hunting, paddling, and leadership expeditions where they build confidence, connection, and lifelong support networks with others who understand their journey.

About Gold Star Teen Adventures

Gold Star Teen Adventures is a 501(c)(3) that provides mentorship, leadership and character development, resilience training and team building for the children of our nation's military, first responders, and intelligence agencies who died in the line of duty, from suicide, or illness. The program teaches critical life skills through year around adventure opportunities and facilitates healing and a return to normalcy for those coping with the sudden loss of a parent. Our objective is to help these teenagers struggling with loss become confident and productive young leaders of character. The three pillars of our programs are: healing, opportunity, and leadership and character development.

Programs

Gold Star Teen Adventures runs year-round programming for youth from ages 14 through 19. Our programs use the outdoors as the tool to achieve our three pillars. We have two academies that span four years. Our two academies are our Scuba Academy and Outdoor Academy.

Gold Star Teen Adventures Scuba Academy is a comprehensive scuba diving program designed to achieve the pillars of our program, and to develop competent, confident, and independent scuba divers over multiple diving adventures. Our Academy starts with our first scuba adventure, where teens are introduced to the wonders of the ocean and become NAUI Scuba Diver certified. The second component of the academy is a weeklong adventure that teaches NAUI Advanced Scuba Diver and Enriched Air Nitrox Diver certifications. Here, teens will further advance their skills, learning to safely dive to deeper depths, conduct more advanced underwater navigation, dive in limited visibility, boat and shore dive, and be introduced to wreck diving. The next component of our diving academy is the GSTA Wreck Trek. The Wreck Trek is a week of intense diving that covers skills required for wreck surveying, introduces skills used for more advanced wreck diving activities, and refines diving skills such as buoyancy, trim, dive planning, and gas consumption. This adventure is an excellent opportunity for teens to improve their diving abilities and prepares them for the rigors of the NAUI Rescue Diver Certification. The final program in the GSTA Scuba Academy is the GSTA Rescue Course. In this course, teens will learn how to manage risks and effectively handle in-water problems and diving emergencies, how to assist and transport divers, and how to perform surface rescues and rescues from depth involving both boat and shore-based skin and scuba divers. Leadership development is woven into all our Scuba Academy events.

The Gold Star Teen Adventures (GSTA) Outdoor Academy is a comprehensive program that is designed to achieve the pillars of GSTA in wilderness settings. Teens will find their confidence through the numerous challenges that the outdoors have to offer, will develop leadership and teamwork skills, will learn the skills of an outdoorsman, and will make lifelong friendships with other teens that have shared the same experiences. The Outdoor Academy Adventures are held every summer, and hunts in the spring and fall. The main components of the program cover a broad range of skills. Our introductory adventure introduces teens to camping fieldcraft, hiking, first aid, navigation, and paddling skills. Our more advanced Outdoor Academy adventures include training in wilderness first aid, bushcraft, primitive survival skills, and backcountry backpacking. Our outdoor academy also includes hunting adventures. Annual hunts include duck, whitetail deer, turkey, and exotic animals.
