In 2016, Porchlight Community Services embarked on a mission to address food insecurity through dignity, choice, and mutual aid. When a local charity feeding the homeless closed, an abundance of food was at risk of spoiling. A grassroots effort by neighbors in central San Diego stepped into rescue and distributed this food, preventing waste and addressing immediate needs.

As we continued our work, we learned about many families' unique challenges—balancing multiple jobs, managing bills, and struggling with limited access to appropriate food options. We realized the need for a different approach—one that provided food and honored personal choice and community support.

In 2019, we officially launched Porchlight Community Services with a client-choice, supermarket-style pantry. This model empowers individuals and families to select foods that fit their dietary needs while preserving their dignity and fostering community.

From our humble beginnings, we have grown to serve over 4,000 families across our community as of December 2023. Our commitment to mutual aid and community support drives us to find new ways to continually assist those in need. We invite you to join us in this journey of solidarity and positive change.
