Story
For a long time, youth in our communities had been asking for a community garden, but it was hard to find land. We decided we didn't need land to start learning about food insecurity and doing something about it!
In spring 2022, People Matter piloted our Pop-up Community Garden Program to start gardening and providing food to community despite not having land.
In summer 2022, our youth Garden Fellows revamped mini gardens at our local schools and libraries.
NOW, we are finally able to acquire land for a permanent youth garden!!
We are People Matter
Our group is very diverse and we have partnership with many groups in Chicago. As People Matter, our mission is to serve the community, improve the environment, and help people in general. Our youth program consist of 12-15 year olds. As we are low income we need to choose between rent or food. We would choose rent because all of us need a roof over our head. That’s why as People Matter, we need to make a community garden for people in our situation so we don’t need to choose between food or rent and can have both. If we have a community garden, people can grab food from the community garden and they would have food to provide for themselves and their families. It would be greatly appreciated if you donate to our cause so we can have a community garden for people in need.
The tools and materials for building the land are $5000 (including a fence, firepit materials, stones, seeds, beds, wood, and more).
Help us build this garden for our Black, Brown and Asian youth on Chicago's South Side. Help us build this space for healing, community, and justice. <3
