The Power of Girls Story

Founder, Tameka Kee still remembers the exact day it happened. Her husband asked, “If you could do anything career-wise just for merit and satisfaction, not getting paid, what would it be?” Without hesitation, she answered “help girls”. It took her back to a pivotal moment in middle school where her life changed forever.

As a young teenager, Tameka loved drama class, but lacked the confidence necessary to perform on stage. During this same time, her teacher invited Tameka and her grandmother on a student trip to Greece and Italy. The idea of leaving the country, let alone New York, was something that she hadn’t thought of as a young black girl in her community. That said, she can’t express enough how life-changing this trip was for her and her development. The international exposure gave Tameka a heightened sense of perspective, and her confidence did a complete 180. She went from a timid, uncertain teenage girl to running for and winning 8th grade class president when she returned home from her international trip.”

Our mission is to serve, inspire and empower young girls to develop into confident, well-rounded global leaders through mentorship, team building and cultural experiences. The program culminates with an international trip. Why international travel? Travel is a way to view the world through a broader lens- understanding different cultures and widening our perspectives. For young girls especially, travel is both eye-opening and empowering. It allows us to stretch our comfort zones, build confidence in new skills, spark our curiosity, and explore our ideas about the world around us. For our Power of Girls, travel is truly a transformative experience!
