Our Home Is at Risk

Since 1982, the St. Charles County Historical Society has made its home at 101 South Main Street, in space donated by the City of St. Charles. That 44-year arrangement ends on December 31, 2026, and it will not be renewed.

Inside this building are more than 200 years of county records, 14,000 photographs, 75,000 genealogy records, and 1,700 library volumes, used every week by researchers, students, and families tracing their roots.

To keep this collection together and open to the public, we must own the building by December 31, 2026. We are raising $600,000 to purchase the building and cover closing and transition costs. In 2027, a second phase will fund accessibility improvements, climate control, and the preservation work described below.

Every gift matters. $25 preserves a photograph. $100 sponsors a box in the archives. $1,000 sponsors a file cabinet of records, with your name on it for future researchers to see.

A Legacy at Risk

For decades, the St. Charles County Historical Society Inc has served as the guardian of our region's unique heritage. Our archives house thousands of original documents, maps, and photographs that tell the story of our community from its founding to the present day. However, historical records are fragile. Without proper conservation and modern digital access, the primary sources of our shared identity are at risk of being lost to time.

The Need for Preservation

Current limitations in our archival storage and digital infrastructure mean that many of our most significant records remain inaccessible to the public. To fulfill our mission of providing public access for future generations, we must upgrade our preservation capabilities. Our current facility requires specialized climate controls and high resolution scanning equipment to protect documents that are over 150 years old. Data shows that professional archival standards are essential to prevent the degradation of paper and ink in our Missouri climate.

Our Preservation Vision

Your support for this fundraising campaign will allow us to execute a comprehensive modernization project, including:

Installing high efficiency climate monitoring systems to protect delicate paper records.
Purchasing professional grade archival scanners to digitize over 10,000 unique historical documents.
Expanding our public research room to accommodate more students, genealogists, and historians.
Creating an online searchable database to provide 24/7 access to St. Charles County records.

Support Our Mission

Your Direct Impact

When you give to the St. Charles County Historical Society Inc, you are making a direct investment in the educational resources of our community. A gift of $100 can preserve a set of 19th century maps, while a larger contribution ensures that a local student can access the primary documents they need for a thesis or school project. Every dollar contributed goes toward the physical and digital protection of our county's story.

We invite you to join us in this critical investment. By supporting this campaign, you ensure that the diverse history of St. Charles County remains a vibrant resource for the education of future generations. Help us reach our goal and safeguard our community's legacy today.
